People come here for the sunshine and beautiful beaches but there is much more to it than that. Hike to spectacular white sandstone boulders of Ojai’s Piedra Blanca, or head to Vasquez Rocks where you can climb on the tilted rock that has been violently exposed and shifted over the past 25 million years by the legendary San Andreas Fault. Take a getaway weekend at Bear Lake for quick easy access to slopes or time at the lake. Or head to Switzer Falls for a day hike to get out of the city. In the Santa Monica Mountains you can hike the historic Solstice Canyon followed by a relaxing time at the beach and bluffs of Malibu’s Point Dume. Learn about the native Satwiwa tribe at Rancho Sierra Vista followed by a bike ride to the sea. Head further south and you can see and support animals on the brink of extinction at the world-class San Diego Zoo. Visit Torrey Pines State Reserve in San Diego for ocean cliff walks, long walks on the beach, amazing sunsets, and witness the rarest pine tree in North America. San Diego is also a great place to witness gray whales as they head up the California coast for the longest migration on the planet, an astonishing roundtrip of 12,000 miles.
