Overview

The intertidal zone is one of the harshest environments on Earth. Tidepools are shallow pools of water on or around rocks that are exposed when the tide is low. Many tidal animals live in or near tidepools, facing challenges both above and below water. When the tide is high, these animals are exposed to underwater dangers such as fish, currents, and lobsters. When the tide is low, they face sun, waves, wind, birds, mammals, and people.

The Four Tidal Zones

Spray Zone

The spray zone is the highest area of the intertidal zone, almost always dry and exposed to the sun and salt spray. It is rarely, if ever, submerged by tides. The constant sun exposure, salt spray, and lack of water make this zone extremely harsh. It is mostly bare of animal life, with just a few scattered barnacles and periwinkles that have adapted to survive with minimal moisture.

High Tidal Zone

The high tidal zone is only underwater once a day during high tide. This zone is hit hardest by pounding waves and faces extreme conditions. Animals here must survive long periods out of water while also withstanding powerful wave action when the tide comes in.

Common creatures: Periwinkles, limpets, gooseneck barnacles, mussels, hermit crabs, shore crabs

High tidal zone animals need immersion—to be completely underwater—part of the day. This is when shelled animals can open their shells to eat and reproduce. Predators such as fish and lobsters use this time to move into the tidepools to hunt when the water is high.

In this zone, waves can wash away tidal animals from their home and food source. Barnacles and mussels release their young into the water until they are big enough to attach themselves to a rock. Waves move them to and from the rocks about every three to six hours.

Middle Tidal Zone

The middle tidal zone is underwater twice a day—once during each high tide. This zone experiences moderate conditions compared to the zones above and below it. Many animals travel between the middle and low tidal zones as the water rises and falls.

Common creatures: Gooseneck barnacles, mussels, chitons, acorn barnacles, hermit crabs, shore crabs, sea anemones

In this zone, the constant pounding of waves is a major challenge. Some animals like mussels and barnacles cling tightly to rocks to keep from washing away. Other animals like crabs hide under thick kelp and in rock crevices for protection.

Low Tidal Zone

The lower tidal zone is almost always underwater, with the exception of during very low tides. This zone is home to the widest variety of plant and animal life because it provides the most stable conditions. The longer periods underwater mean less exposure to air and sun.

Daily Challenges Tidepool Animals Face

Tidepool animals face multiple environmental challenges every day as the tides rise and fall:

Pounding Waves

Waves can wash away tidal animals from their home and food source, especially in the high tidal zone. Animals must either attach firmly to rocks (like barnacles and mussels) or find shelter in crevices (like crabs).

Underwater Predators

When the tide is high, fish, lobsters, and other marine predators enter the tidepools to hunt. Small fish and exposed animals become vulnerable to these hunters.

Above-Water Predators (Emersion)

Emersion means being out of the water after being underwater. When tides are low and animals leave the water, sea birds (like snowy plovers and gulls), mammals, and people become threats. Some animals hold tightly onto rocks, others close their shells tight, and some move to the lower tidal zones to find safety in the water.

Desiccation (Extreme Dryness)

Desiccation means extreme dryness. Some animals, like mussels, clam up tight to keep from losing their moisture. Barnacles will grow close together to reduce evaporation and keep from drying out.

Temperature Changes

The temperature of the water and the air in the tidal zone are very different from each other. Tidepool animals must be able to adapt or protect themselves. Anemones, for example, pull in their tentacles and close up to protect themselves. They will also gather bits of shells around themselves for shade.

Changes in Water Salinity

The sun's heat evaporates some of the tide pool water, making it saltier than the ocean around it. Rain can then decrease this salinity because it is fresh water and does not contain salt. Animals must adapt to these constantly changing salt levels.

Too Much Love

We love visiting tidepools, and it is fun to explore them! However, we need to be careful. We can kill animals and plants by stepping on them or by trying to take them home. When visiting tidepools, follow these rules:

  • Touch animals only as gently as you would touch your own eyeball
  • Never remove animals or plants from tidepools
  • If you lift a rock, always replace it carefully in the same position
  • Watch where you step to avoid crushing creatures
  • Stay on designated paths when possible

Understanding Tides

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon (and to a lesser extent, the sun) on Earth's oceans. As the Earth rotates, different areas experience high and low tides—usually two of each per day. To visit tidepools at the best time, you'll want to go during low tide when the most area is exposed. You can check tide tables online or through weather apps to find the best times to visit tidepools in your area.

Learning Activity: Homemade Tidepool

Tide pools are fun, magical places where families can explore and discover new creatures and life. They are only found on rocky shores at low tide, which can make them tricky to get to. A visit to a tide pool takes some planning and a little knowledge of tides to visit at the best time of day. This activity is designed to help your family understand tides and what tidepool animals' lives are like, so you can have the best tide pooling trip possible.

Materials:

  • Toy sea creatures or figurines (snails, mussels, sea stars, urchins, crabs, sea slugs, small fish, larger fish or sharks)
  • Rocks of varying sizes (including some larger rocks)
  • Sand
  • Large baking tin or shallow container
  • Water
  • Hot glue gun (adult supervision required)
  • Optional: modeling clay or drawn/cut-out pictures if you don't have toy creatures

Instructions:

Building Your Tidepool

  1. Place a layer of sand on the bottom of your tray.
  2. Using your hot glue gun (with adult help), glue your sea creatures such as snails, mussels, sea stars, and urchins onto your large-sized rocks. These represent creatures that attach or hold onto rocks.
  3. Place these large rocks with attached creatures on one side of your tray. Add other rocks around them to create crevices and hiding places.
  4. Hide crabs in the cracks between your rocks.
  5. Place other creatures like sea slugs and small fish in your tidepool near your rocks.
  6. Add sharks or large fish to the other end of your tray (the deeper water area).

Simulating the Tides

  1. Low Tide: Add water to your tray. Fill your tray until the water just touches the bottom of your rocks. Put your hand on the water and gently push up and down to create small waves. What challenges do your creatures face? Are they too dry? Are there birds or people that might step on them or disturb them? Is the sun evaporating the tide pool water?

  2. Middle Tide: Add more water until it reaches halfway up the rocks. Place your hand on the water and push up and down creating larger waves. What challenges do you see for your sea creatures? Are the waves moving them around? Are they getting enough water now?

  3. High Tide: Add more water so your rocks are completely covered. Place your hand on the water and push up and down creating waves. What challenges do you see for your sea creatures? Can bigger fish reach them now? Is the water colder or warmer? Are they able to open their shells and eat?

Try These Experiments:

  • Add ice cubes to simulate cold temperature changes
  • Sprinkle a little salt to show evaporation increasing salinity
  • Pour fresh water (use a different container) to simulate rain decreasing salinity
  • Tilt the tray to create extreme waves and see what happens to the creatures

What to Observe:

General Questions:

  • Which tidal zone do you think would be the easiest to survive in? Why?
  • What do you notice about each creature that would help it survive in the different tidal zones?
  • If you were a tidepool animal, which zone would you choose to live in and why?

Specific Adaptations to Notice:

  • Spray Zone: This zone is almost always dry. Only the toughest creatures like a few barnacles and periwinkles can survive here. What makes them special?
  • High Tidal Zone: Shelled animals like mussels, barnacles, and limpets hold tightly onto rocks to keep from being swept away by waves, drying out, and being eaten by birds like snowy plovers. They can only eat and reproduce when underwater.
  • Middle Tidal Zone: Anemones close up as the tide goes down to keep from drying out. They also pick up rocks and shell bits to use as shade. Crabs and fish hide near and between rocks to stay safe from waves and predators.
  • Low Tidal Zone: When the tide rises, larger fish can enter the pools. What might happen to the smaller fish? This zone has the most variety of life because it stays underwater the longest.

Questions by Tidal Zone:

  • During low tide, which animals are most at risk from birds like snowy plovers?
  • During high tide, which animals are most at risk from fish and lobsters?
  • Which creatures moved to different zones as the tide changed? Why might they do this?
  • How do the waves affect creatures differently in each zone?
  • What happens when the water gets too salty or not salty enough?

Planning Your Tidepool Visit

After completing this activity, you'll be ready to visit real tidepools! Remember:

  • Check tide tables to find the lowest tide times in your area
  • Arrive 30-60 minutes before the lowest tide for the best exploring
  • Wear shoes with good grip—rocks can be slippery!
  • Bring a bucket to look at creatures up close, but always return them to where you found them
  • Practice the tidepool etiquette rules: touch gently, never remove animals, replace rocks carefully
