Water is on a wild adventure every time it rains — and your backyard is part of the journey. In this homelab, we'll discover what a watershed is, why it matters, and make our own mini watershed model right at home!
What Is a Watershed?
Think about the last time you were caught in a rainstorm. Where did all that water go? It didn't just disappear! Gravity pulls water downhill — just like water circling a drain in your kitchen sink — until it collects somewhere at the bottom.
That whole area of land where water drains to the same place is called a watershed. When it rains in the mountains, water runs into streams, sneaks underground, and trickles through creeks until it all comes together in a river, lake, or even the ocean.
Why Do Watersheds Matter?
Watersheds aren't just about water — they're about everything connected to it. Every forest, farm, neighborhood, and city in the area plays a role in keeping the watershed healthy.
- 🌲 Forests help — Trees drink up water and drop leaves into streams, feeding tiny creatures that fish love to eat.
- 🌾 Farms use it — Farmers depend on watershed water to grow the food we eat — but fertilizers can also wash back in.
- 🏙️ Cities affect it — When it rains in a city, pollution on roads and sidewalks gets swept right into nearby rivers.

When rivers and streams pass by factories or busy roads, they can pick up chemicals, oil, and garbage — harming the health of the whole watershed. That's why protecting our watersheds means protecting our water, our food, and the animals that share our world.
🌧️ Activity: Build Your Own Watershed!
Time to get hands-on! We're going to build a mini watershed model that shows exactly how pollution travels through water — from the mountaintops all the way to the river. It's a little messy and a whole lot of fun.
Why this activity? Seeing is believing! When you watch food coloring and glitter race down your model mountains and collect in the valleys, it clicks — that's exactly what happens in real watersheds when it rains.
What You'll Need
- Cups (as many as you want)
- Tupperware containers (as many as you want)
- Water bottles (as many as you want)
- White plastic tablecloth
- Food coloring (2 or more colors)
- Glitter or sprinkles
- Small shredded paper
- Large spray bottle (one per person or take turns)
Let's Build It!
- Spread your cups, bottles, and tupperware across a table to create mountains and hills. The taller the stack, the bigger the mountain!
- Drape your white plastic tablecloth over everything. It should dip into the gaps between containers — those become your valleys and plains.
- Before you add anything, talk about what each "pollutant" represents. Glitter = microplastics and tiny trash. Shredded paper = bigger litter like straws and wrappers. Food coloring = invisible pollution like chemicals, soap, pesticides, and car oil.
- Now it's time to pollute your watershed! Scatter glitter, paper, and drops of food coloring across your mountaintops and hilltops.
- Make it rain! Use your spray bottle to sprinkle water over the mountains. Watch what happens — where does everything end up?
👀 What to Watch For
- Did all the "pollution" travel downhill and collect in the same low spots?
- Could you tell which color came from which mountain?
- What happened to the glitter — did it spread farther than you expected?
- How does the water look after it picks up all the food coloring?
This model represents what happens in real watersheds every time it rains. Cars drop oil on roads, and the rain washes it into ditches and eventually into rivers and lakes. When people leave trash near the water — whether at a lake, on a hiking trail, or along a creek — the next rainstorm carries it downstream.

It might feel like too big a problem to fix — but there's actually a lot your family can do! Discuss what happens in your own neighborhood when it rains. Where might pollution be entering your local watershed? Then set one or two goals your family is willing to commit to, like picking up litter on walks, using fewer chemicals in the yard, or being more careful about what goes down the drain.
